Christmas in Joshua Tree

For Christmas this year, we took a short loop tour through southern California, beginning and ending in San Diego.  Our loop took us east across the coast range to the Salton Sea, so we rode through a mix of climates – desert, mountains, the coast.  In  the middle of the tour we rented a car for a few days so we could bike through Joshua Tree National Monument, because the distance between lodgings near the park is too much for our oldish legs to handle, especially when the days are short.  It was a good thing, because it snowed while we were in Joshua Tree – it was a spectacular time to see the desert, but we wouldn’t have liked getting caught out in it too far from shelter.

Here’s the day by day journal, and an overview map.

Our route began and ended in San Diego. The blue line is the portion of the tour where we rented a car and took day rides or hiked in Joshua Tree National Monument.
